What are Joint Injections?

Joint injections are a minimally invasive treatment option used to relieve pain caused by inflammatory joint conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, tendonitis, bursitis and gout. Certain medications, such as corticosteroids or viscosupplementation, used to reduce inflammation and minimize pain, are injected into the affected joint. This medication only affects the targeted area and does not usually cause side effects. Joint injections are administered under local anesthesia and only cause mild, brief discomfort for patients.

Ultrasound-Guided Joint Injections

In order to ensure the precise administration and most effective results from joint injections, Dr. Najam performs these treatments under ultrasound guidance. Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to produce real-time images of the internal structures of the body, with no radiation and no side effects.

Joint injections can be used to relieve pain in the:

  • Knee
  • Shoulder
  • Ankle
  • Elbow
  • Wrist
  • Thumb
  • Hip

Most patients can benefit from ultrasound-guided joint injections and are good candidates for treatment, unless they have an infection in the joint or an allergy to one or more of the medications to be used. Dr. Najam will develop a customized treatment plan for each individual patient in order to achieve long-lasting pain relief.
